Spirometry

What is Spirometry?

Spirometry or Pulmonary Function tests(PFTs) means- the measuring of the breath. It is specifically the assessment of the volume and flow of air that can be inhaled and exhaled. With the use of a spirometer, this test can help diagnose various lung conditions such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis or the most common Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

When can one opt for a Spirometry?

If you normally experience breathlessness, have difficulty breathing, or otherwise suspect you have a lung disease, ask your doctor for PFTs. This kind of procedure is fast, painless and non-invasive.

How is it done?

A spirometry is done with the use of the device called spirometer. Generally, the patient is asked to inhale as long as possible and exhale as hard as possible to record the volume and flow of air that passes through the lungs. During the test, a nose clip may be required to use to avoid release of air through the nose. Usually, the method of success of spirometry is relative to the patient’s cooperation and effort. Oftentimes, several sessions are required to ensure productivity of the results.
